Yahoo is cutting off Facebook integration through its social reader, the Yahoo Social Bar, an app that has declined precipitously in popularity. The company claims that it is sunsetting the Yahoo Social Bar in order to work on more Yahoo-centric features for current users.

The Yahoo Social Bar will no longer be available as of today the company announced.

Yahoo emailed current users, letting them know that the Social Bar will be discontinued:

More than ever, we’re focused on building products that are beautiful and meaningful for our users. Sometimes, this means we have to make tough decisions — like closing down features that we feel aren’t adding enough value to the user experience. This helps us spend more energy on creating experiences that make Yahoo the most fun way to spend your time.

With this in mind, we have decided to discontinue Yahoo Social Bar.

Yahoo Social Bar, will no longer be available as of October 4th. This will enable us to refocus our efforts on modernizing our core Yahoo products experiences and of course, create new ones. All of your reading activity has been removed from our servers and the Social Bar app will be removed from the App Center on Facebook.

Statistics from AppData show that over the past year, the Yahoo Social Bar hit a zenith in April 2013, with roughly 27.5 million monthly active users (MAU), but has since fallen to about 10.8 million MAU. At one point, the Yahoo Social Bar was even the top free iOS app, but now it ranks 63rd in terms of Facebook MAU.
